PLEXR Plus Recovery: What to Do (and Avoid) After Treatment
By SL Aesthetic Medicine LLC | October 25, 2026
We do PLEXR Plus in Madison because a lot of people want firmer-looking skin without surgery. The single most important rule after your appointment is simple: keep the carbon crusts alone. Don’t pick, rub, or “help” them off. In the first 48 hours, keep the area clean, avoid heat and sweating, apply the barrier ointment we recommended, and let your skin do its thing. Crusting and mild swelling are normal, usually over about 7 to 14 days, and your job is to protect that healing window.
Quick timeline: days 1 to 2 focus on calm and clean. Days 3 to 10 you’ll see more crusting and flaking. Most people look much more “back to normal” once the crusts shed naturally. Keep sun off the area the whole time, and keep protecting it after you’re healed.
First 24 to 48 hours after PLEXR Plus: keep it cool, clean, and boring
Right after PLEXR Plus, we want your skin quiet. Think low drama. Most issues we see, like prolonged redness or irritation, come from heat, friction, and people accidentally overdoing it with products.
Do this
- Use cold compresses if you’re puffy. Keep them clean and don’t press hard.
- Cleanse gently. If we gave you specific cleanser instructions, follow those. If you’re unsure, keep it mild and fragrance-free.
- Apply a thin layer of barrier ointment as directed. More is not better. We just want a light protective layer.
- Sleep a little elevated if swelling is noticeable, especially when the area treated is around the eyes.
Avoid this
- Heat: hot showers, saunas, hot yoga, steam rooms. Heat tends to increase swelling and redness.
- Sweating: workouts, long runs, heavy lifting. Sweat plus friction slows healing.
- Touching, rubbing, or “checking” the area constantly. Hands carry bacteria and it’s easy to dislodge crusts.
- Harsh actives (like strong acids or retinoids) unless we told you to use them. Early healing time is not the moment to experiment.
Small thing that matters: if you’re commuting through the Mineral Point Road corridor, plan for a couple of calm days. We can’t control the weather, but we can keep your skin protected from wind, heat changes, and accidental friction.
Days 3 to 14: crusting is normal, picking is the fastest way to ruin results
This is the part that surprises people. Your skin can look a little rough before it looks better. The carbon crusts are doing an important job, like a protective cover while new skin forms underneath. Let them shed on their own.
Keep cleansing gently and keep using the barrier ointment as directed. Try not to “scrub off” flakes. Also, keep workouts, pools, saunas, and heavy exercise on pause for 7 to 14 days, or until the crusts are gone and the surface is fully healed.
Makeup and social plans
We know you have real life, like meetings, events, and UW schedules. As a general rule, skip makeup on the treated area until the crusts have naturally shed and the skin is closed and calm. Covering healing crusts with makeup often leads to irritation and delayed healing.
A lot of our patients come in from Madison, Fitchburg, Middleton, Verona, Monona, and Cross Plains because they want predictable healing and local follow-ups. If you’re not sure if what you’re seeing is normal, don’t guess. Reach out.
The aftercare routine that protects PLEXR Plus tone and texture results
PLEXR Plus is meant to improve tone, texture, and overall firmness. The way you treat your skin during healing is a big part of how smooth that finish looks once you’re on the other side.
What we like in the healing phase
- Gentle cleanser and lukewarm water.
- Barrier support with the ointment we recommended.
- Simple hydration once the surface is healed enough for it, especially in colder months.
- Hands off. This is a routine, not a project.
Madison winter note: our cool, dry autumn and winter air can make healing skin feel tighter and drier. Be extra gentle, don’t over-cleanse, and a humidifier at night often helps a lot.
Sun protection starts as soon as your skin is re-epithelialized
During crusting, we focus on keeping sun off the area with hats and shade. Once the skin has re-epithelialized, meaning it’s closed and no longer raw, we want you in a broad-spectrum SPF 30 to 50 daily. Long-term, this is what protects the improvement you came in for.
“Is this normal?” When to reach out to our Madison team
A little swelling, crusting, and redness are expected parts of PLEXR Plus recovery. What we don’t want is you sitting at home worried, or pushing through something that’s getting worse.
Reach out promptly if you notice:
- Increasing pain that doesn’t settle.
- Spreading redness, especially if it’s hot to the touch.
- Fever or chills.
- Unusual discharge or a smell that concerns you.
"I was not pressured into expensive procedures or injections I didn't want."
one of our first-time clients
If you want us to take a look, we’re an easy Mineral Point Road stop for quick post-treatment checkups. We’ll talk through what you’re seeing, what’s normal for your stage of healing, and what to do next so you don’t lose sleep over it.
And if you’re still deciding between options, our team also wrote a straightforward comparison on PLEXR Plus vs. blepharoplasty so you can make a call that fits your goals and your schedule.
A quick note on timing, pricing, and planning your next step
PLEXR Plus appointments at our clinic are typically 60 minutes, and pricing starts at $900. The biggest planning piece is recovery. If you have photos, a wedding, a big presentation, or a trip, give yourself a buffer so you’re not trying to rush the crusting phase.
If you’re a busy commuter, parent, or student, we’ll map the timeline with you before you leave. Clear expectations make the healing period a lot easier.
