Xeomin Aftercare: First 48 Hours and Week-by-Week Tips image

Xeomin takes about two weeks for the full effect, and the biggest rule right after your appointment is simple: don’t touch or rub the treated areas. Keep your hands off, stay upright for the first 4 hours, and skip anything that heats you up or increases blood flow, like hard workouts, alcohol, saunas, and facials for 24 to 48 hours.

We’re in Madison, and we see people pop in for injectables and go right back to real life. This guide is the quick, time-based version we’d tell you at the front desk, especially if you’re heading back out along the Mineral Point Road and West Towne corridor and want to protect your results.

First 0 to 48 hours after Xeomin: the rules that make the difference

The goal in the first two days is to let Xeomin settle in the right place and to keep swelling and bruising as low as we can. Most people have minimal downtime, but small choices matter here.

Quick checklist: Stay upright for 4 hours. Don’t rub or massage. Skip strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas, and facials for 24 to 48 hours.

0 to 4 hours

  • Stay upright: no lying down or napping for the first 4 hours.
  • Hands off: no rubbing, pressing, or “checking” the area in the mirror every 5 minutes.
  • Makeup: if you can, wait a few hours before applying makeup so the injection points have time to calm down.

Day 1 to Day 2

  • Skip heavy workouts: we generally recommend taking 24 to 48 hours off from strenuous exercise.
  • Avoid heat: no sauna, hot yoga, steam rooms, or super-hot showers. Heat can make swelling and bruising more likely.
  • Go easy on alcohol: especially in the first 24 hours, since it can also make bruising more noticeable.
  • Hold off on facial treatments: no facials or anything that involves massage or pressure on the face.
  • Blood-thinning supplements: when possible, avoid them around treatment time since they can increase bruising. If something is prescribed, keep taking it as directed and ask us if you’re unsure.

Days 3 to 7: how to live normally without messing up your Xeomin

This is the week when people start staring at their forehead like it’s a scoreboard. Try not to. Xeomin doesn’t “flip on” overnight. Most people see changes starting around day 3 to 5, and full effect often shows up by days 7 to 14.

Madison tip: Cold, dry winters can make skin feel tight, and bright summer sun can sneak up fast. Keep your skincare gentle this week and stay consistent with hydration and daily sunscreen.

Avoid pressure and “face work” for 2 weeks

For the first two weeks, skip anything that presses, pulls, or deeply rubs the treated areas. That includes facial massage, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and aggressive at-home tools over the injection sites. We love skin treatments here, but timing matters. If you’re on a plan with us, we’ll help you space things out so your injectables and skin work support each other.

Normal things that are usually fine

  • Washing your face gently with lukewarm water.
  • Your usual work schedule and errands, including quick stops around the West Towne area.
  • Light activity once you’re past that first 24 to 48-hour window.

Week-by-week Xeomin timeline: what you’ll notice (and when)

If you’ve had neurotoxins before, this will feel familiar. If it’s your first time, the timeline helps you stay calm and avoid over-correcting.

Week 1: You may see early softening, especially in frown lines between the brows. Mild swelling or small bruises can happen and usually fade quickly.

Week 2: This is when we judge your result. Xeomin often takes about two weeks for the full effect, so don’t panic at day 5.

Weeks 3 to 8: Most people sit in the “sweet spot” here. Lines look smoother, and makeup tends to sit better because you’re not creasing as hard.

Months 3+: Results vary by person, dose, and muscle strength. When movement starts returning, we’ll talk through your timing for the next visit.

Skincare and habits that keep Xeomin for wrinkles looking smooth

Good aftercare is mostly about being consistent and not getting aggressive too soon. The “best” routine is the one you’ll actually do, especially if you’re juggling work, kids, and everything else around Madison.

Stick to simple for 2 weeks

  • Gentle cleanser and lukewarm water.
  • Moisturizer to help with Madison’s cold, dry winter air.
  • Daily sunscreen year-round, especially during bright summer sun.

If you’re on active treatments: we carry PCA and SkinMedica in clinic, and we’ll tell you exactly when to pause and when to restart stronger products around your injections.

And if you’re planning facials, peels, microneedling, or microdermabrasion, let us know your Xeomin date so we can space your schedule in a way that keeps your skin calm and your results clean.

When to reach out to our Madison team (and when it’s just normal)

Mild swelling, a small bump at an injection point, tenderness, or a bruise can be normal. Most of the time, it’s the kind of thing you notice in the mirror more than anyone else does.

Reach out right away if you have: severe pain, spreading redness, fever, drainage, or sudden asymmetry that worries you.

We’re here for quick check-ins and follow-ups, especially if you’re coming through the Mineral Point Road and West Towne corridor and want same-week guidance. We also see clients from Fitchburg, Middleton, Verona, Monona, and Cross Plains, so you don’t have to guess on aftercare at home. If you want a step-by-step prep guide before your next visit, read what to expect from your first Xeomin appointment. And if you’re comparing options, our overview of injectables (neuromodulators and dermal fillers) breaks down what each one is best for.
